December, 2000 Trivia Question and Answer
Question:
The four U.S. presidents carved on Mount Rushmore (Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Roosevelt) were each chosen to represent a particular aspect of the development of the nation. Do you know which attributes/aspects are represented (and the president associated with each)?
Answer:
Four presidents are depicted on Mount Rushmore and they were each chosen to represent an ideal. George Washington represents the nation's founding; Thomas Jefferson, the nation's political philosophy; Abraham Lincoln, preservation of the nation; and Theodore Roosevelt, expansion and conservation of the nation. The four presidents are an eternal reminder of the birth, growth, preservation, and development of a nation dedicated to democracy and the pursuit of individual liberty. Thank you to one of our readers, Celeste, who submitted this answer: The main purpose of the monument was to show a group of four leaders that brought the country from colonial times. -- George Washington - was the commander of the Revolutionary army and First U.S. President. -- Thomas Jefferson - author of the Declaration of Independence, he was our 3rd President and an advocate for westward growth. -- Theodore Roosevelt - 26th President, he also promoted construction of the Panama Canal. -- Abraham Lincoln - 16th President, ended slavery and restored the Union.
