November, 2000

The theme of November's newsletter is "Giving". What does it mean to give? One definition states that giving is:

To entrust to another, usually for a specified reason

Sun Associates works with educators from around the country and we are always impressed by educators willingness to entrust us with their techniques, tools, and reflections upon technology's role in teaching and learning. This newsletter allows us to "give" a little bit back to you.

We hope you'll enjoy this issue of Sun Associates News. If you have found us on the web and would like to subscribe for the monthly email issue, please let us know at newsletter@sun-associates.com.

I. NEWS FEATURE -- Jennifer Kagan (jkagan@sun-associates.com)

Sun Associates is pleased to announce that we have been retained by the Massachusetts Department of Education to design and implement a series of Educational Technology Mentor Training Institutes for their Technology Mentor and New Teacher Grant program. This program is part of the Department's school year 2000/2001 TLCF grant program and ties together Massachusetts' existing work in teacher mentoring with the development of technology-enriched curricula.

Over the course of the Institute series, participants will engage in a variety of activities designed to broaden their skills as teacher leaders and deepen their understanding of technology's role in teaching and learning. Sun Associates will focusing our professional development efforts on assisting the teacher mentors in understanding the principles of good professional development design and the how-tos of developing tecnology-enriched curriculum units.

Two primary resources for the Institutes are available as publications from Sun Associates. These are:

Both Planning into Practice and Click on Success! are available from Sun Associates. Contact our Publications Office for more information (email or call 978-453-3070 ext. 202)

II. INTEGRATION IDEA OF THE MONTH -- Heather Hurley (hhurley@sun-associates.com)

Welcome to the Integration Idea of the Month. Each month I share a technology project that you can implement in your classroom. All lessons are designed for the one or few computer classroom, though a lab setting will work just as well. If you have questions or suggestions for future projects, email me.

The month of November can begin a season when students are thinking about receiving rather than giving. Try creating a class book that revolves around the notion of giving rather than receiving.

For a detailed description, check out the lesson plan for "What We Can Give" on the Sun Associates web site -- Happy Integrating :)

III SPOTLIGHT ON THE WEB -- Melissa Chatfield (mchatfield@sun-associates.com)

November is a great time of year to focus on the importance of "giving" in your classroom. Visit the Do Something web site to see what educators and students across the nation, are giving to their communities. Go to the section for educators and register as a coach to access free lesson plans, aligned with NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress) content standards. Specifically, check out the Kindness and Justice Challenge that inspires young people in classrooms nationwide to perform Acts of Kindness (helping others) and Justice (standing up for what's right) and find out how you can bring the K & J challenge to your classroom.

Web Search Tip:

You can use an asterisk (*) to search for a word when you are unsure how it is spelled or how it ends. For example, if you can’t remember how to spell Pablo Picasso you can enter the keyword (+Pablo +Picas*) to find documents that contain "Pablo" and any word starting with "Picas." If you enter the keyword (painting*), the search engine will find both the singular and plural form of the word "painting."
