I. NEW @ SUN ASSOCIATES

It's been a very busy and very eventful summer out here at Sun Associates. In addition to working on a number of exciting professional development and evaluation projects (check out our on-going Mercer County, WV project for a lot of new professional development and integration resources), we have also found time to focus on the development of our organizational structure. To wit, we've added four new staff members who we would like you to meet!

Maureen Yoder, Associate Director, brings both classroom and higher education experience to the organization. Her experience includes professional development, curriculum integration, distance learning, and program evaluation. Maureen is a Full Professor at Lesley University, and the Program Director of the Technology in Education Online Master's Degree Program. Maureen has her doctorate in Educational Media and Technology from Boston University.

Kerry McLaughlin, Staff Development Associate, is a highly accomplished technology-using classroom teacher. She joins Sun Associates with over eight years of classroom experience and focuses on the development and delivery of teacher professional development. Kerry holds multiple Massachusetts teacher certifications and has a Masters in Ed from Boston College (MA).

Lois Reynolds, Staff Development Associate, has classroom teaching experience as both a technology teacher/coordinator and a music educator. Her teaching experience is in addition to 13 years of work as a Software Engineer and Support Specialist. II. THIS MONTH'S FEATURE -- INTERNET SAFETY

Across the country, teachers are dusting off their classroom equipment, and making resolutions to integrate Internet research into their curriculum. It's likely that since you are reading this newsletter, you are thinking about the pitfalls your students may uncover as they are researching for your class. How can you prepare your students and their parents to safeguard children while using the Internet?

Despite the filters and the supervision that you rely on, students may still encounter a site that asks for their name and address for marketing, or leads them to pornography. First, know the laws. Did you know that it is illegal to solicit information by manipulative marketers from a child under the age of 13 without parental consent? Did you know that you can report child pornography sites and unfair marketing sites? Here are two ways that you can become an active participant in Internet safety.

In the full continuation of this story you can read about two ways that you can become an active participant in Internet safety.

III. INTEGRATION IDEA OF THE MONTH -- SEARCHING FOR LUCY

Welcome to the Integration Idea of the Month. Each month we share a technology project that you can implement in your classroom. All lessons are designed for the one or few computer classroom, though a lab setting will work just as well.

This month's lesson is entitled Searching for Lucy and is a social studies unit for middle grades.

For many students searching the WorldWideWeb for some particular information can be as frustrating as it is rewarding. This month's classroom activity demonstrates to students the importance of being specific about a topic when searching the web.

Curriculum Area: Social Studies/ Early Man
Grade Level: Middle SchoolTechnology
Skills Developed: Searching the Internet, Bookmarking, Inserting Pictures, Citing Internet Sources
Student Grouping: Individual and Whole
Class Time: 2 class periods
Materials: Internet, Microsoft Word

For the full details, check out the lesson plan for Looking for Lucy.

Sun Associates has many lesson planning resources at their website. Take a look at the Links to Educational Resources and Lesson Plans that can be found at Sun Associates WWW Resources.

If you have questions or suggestions for future projects, email Kerry
