What We Can Give

Curriculum Area: Language Arts

Standards Addressed: Students use spoken, written, and visual language to accomplish their own purposes (e.g., for learning, enjoyment, persuasion, and the exchange of information) - The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).

Technology Skill Level: Moderate

Student Grouping: Pairs of Students

Materials:

Procedure:

  1. In a large group setting, brainstorm with your students things that they can give. Explain to students that they don't have to be tangible objects. An example of this is the giving of time. Designate a recorder to write the list on chart paper.
  2. Set students up to work in pairs.
  3. Each group of two chooses one item to illustrate and write a paragraph about.
  4. Before going to the computer, each student pair writes a paragraph explaining why it is important to give their item.
  5. Each group edits their paragraph.
  6. At the computer, each student pair creates their picture with the paint program and enters their final text.
  7. When each group is finished, have them print out their picture.
  8. Bind all of the pictures into a book and read it to the class.

As an extension, students can read the book to lower grades in their school.
