Internet Scavenger Hunt

Integration Idea of the Month -- October, 2001

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute has created an interactive distance learning web site where students have the opportunity to see science discoveries happening in real time. This lesson focuses on Expedition 5 which took place between August 5 and September 24, 2001. The expedition explored the undersea volcanic slopes of the Galapagos Islands.

Curriculum Area: Science/Scientific Tools
Grade Level: Middle School
Skills Developed: Using the Internet
Student Grouping: Pairs
Time: 2 class periods
Technology Used: Internet

Procedure:

1. As part of a discussion on scientific tools let students know that they are going to have the opportunity to see in real-time how scientists are using tools in deep sea research.

2. Have students go to Woods Hole's Dive and Discover web site. Here, students should read through the different parts of this site so they become familiar with all its parts.

3. Students should next work in pairs to search through the information about this expedition with the specific purpose of answering a set of questions developed for this activity. Here are the questions we have developed. Naturally, you may want to add to this list after you have review the site's content.

4. As a follow up to this activity have students create a poster that contrasts the tools that might be used by scientists to research the deep-sea to those used to research tide pools. We have also supplied a sample rubric for assessing student work in this project.
